‘Muckle’ is Doric for ‘big’ and this big rock on the shore horizon sticks up as a landmark in a complex ‘ruckle o stanes’ on the shore just west of Gardenstown in Aberdeenshire. The beautiful calligraphy of the rock structure and the unusual square-ish rockpool surrounded by tilted slabs of purple and pink stone is revealed twice a day at low tide. It is hard walking, but such a wonderful abstract experience.
The work is currently on tour in the exhibition ‘The Coast Road Diaries 2007-2009’. A 64 page publication based on the exhibition is available from The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh Scotland £10 + p&p.
