Early in the year of 2003 I joined a group of Scottish artists, musicians and performers on a cultural trip to Ajaccio in Corsica for a Festival of Scottish Culture - Rabbie Burns and all. Whilst over there exhibiting my Scottish work for the festival, I made this drawing on a rare day off from cultural evangelism. Drawing ‘on site’ on a large scale was one of the challenges that I had set myself at that time with unexpected results.
My constant interest in the architecture of trees as an expressive urban form is in contrast to the invented map within a location collage held within the work. This drawing was designed to work both formally and conceptually. Although I knew nothing of Corsica then, it was the beginning of a great relationship and future residencies.charcoal and sea map collage on paper
