Kate Downie

This painting featured on the cover of my 2001 catalogue for the exhibition ‘East’.

The title refers to a jousting and parade area in front of Slains Castle, which dates back to the 12th century. I spent 2 months on this coastal peninsula in the North East of Scotland in 2000, making work for this exhibition. My short film’ Driven’ was set in this tilting ground, and the atmosphere of the place is extraordinary. See the catalogue text by Duncan Macmillan.
