Kate Downie

One of the central paintings for ‘East’ I spent 2 months on this coastal peninsula in the North East of Scotland in 2000, making work for this exhibition. This image was created during the making of  my short film’ Driven’ set in the approach to the tilting ground.  ‘Gloaming’ is the Scots word for dusk, and in the northern midsummer the dusk goes on and on. The tension between the remains of the daylight and the projected headlight was key to this and many other works at that time.  See the catalogue text by Duncan Macmillan.
