The limestone pavement geology of The Burren in West Ireland reminded me so much of the amazing mid-career work of Wilhemina Barnes-Graham, that I wanted to make this painting to celebrate her influence and also try to define the moment of ‘abstract land contemplation’ which I experienced half way down Capanawalla mountain in The Burren. I made this painting in my Edinburgh Studio, based on studies drawn in my CDR notebook in February 2007 whilst visiting a friend studying in Ireland.
The work is currently on tour in the exhibition ‘The Coast Road Diaries 2007-2009’. A 64 page publication based on the exhibition is available from The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh Scotland £10 + p&p.
