Kate Downie

Based on a ‘60’s’ fishing village on the west coast of Norway on an ancient Viking site. Little box houses, wild winds, curved road- 3 elements. I made this work during a happy and productive week in a print workshop in Skudeneshavn, a guest of artists Anna-Kristine Ferking and Kay Gerrad, as part of the Stavanger city of culture North Sea project.

Therefore, it is where the town meets the land meets the sea that I find Kate Downie reveals much in her art. The townscapes have many strokes of the pen/pencil/brush, much like a Modigliani nude, they bristle with energy. Whilst the land and seascapes allow more undisturbed washes of translucent wintry colour, a calmer fluidity overcomes the superficial tensions of the town”

A mono-print or monotype is just that; a unique, one off image which is also a print. Oil-based ink (lithography ink/etching ink or oil paint mixed 50:50 with block printing medium) is applied onto a very flat, hard surface ie 2mm or 3mm acetate, or zinc or sheet aluminium. The ink can be applied directly with a brush or by hand but ideally I prefer using rollers to create an even thin surface of pigment.  I have created these monotypes by using an etching press, but there are many other ways.
