I made this work during a happy and productive week in a print workshop in the seaport Skudeneshavn, a guest of artists Anna-Kristine Ferking and Kay Gerrad, as part of the North Sea Project for Stavanger city of Culture 2008. This zig zag is the shape of the route out to sea, as seen from the studio window. Never has an etching press been so wonderfully sited as in Skudeneshavn.
“Therefore, it is where the town meets the land meets the sea that I find Kate Downie reveals much in her art. The townscapes have many strokes of the pen/pencil/brush, much like a Modigliani nude, they bristle with energy. Whilst the land and seascapes allow more undisturbed washes of translucent wintry colour, a calmer fluidity overcomes the superficial tensions of the town”
