Kate Downie

First exhibited in the Coast Road Diaries, this work was begun as a picture called The Wednesday Road. Overprinting in three or four plates, it was made in homage to both this part of Sutherland in Scotland, but is also referencing the drawing art of Frances Walker RSA. The view is based on the magical winding road that runs from Drumbeg to Lochinver, as seen from a hill just south of Clachtoll. ‘Fall Hill’ came out a bit Chagall-esque full of magic and romantic yearnings - not like Walker’s work at all! The delightful and sometimes nerve-wracking unpredictability of monoprinting: one never knows exactly how things are going to turn out.
